Saunders would work his way back into the bout in round two, and by the third round, he landed a heavy punch on Issah that put him down and out of the fight. The third round stoppage would see Saunders crowned the new Australian Lightweight champion.
We caught up with Saunders after the fight, and had the following exchange.
Issah started like a freight train, but you were able to stamp your authority by the second round. Tell us a bit about how the fight played out, and how you were able to notch such a devastating victory?
Saunders: “Yeah I knew he was going to be strong so my gameplan was to stay outside and out box him. I used the first rounds to pick up his habits and movements and by the second round I had found my range and saw openings well. The third round big punches were thrown by both fighters I saw I had him hurt and poured it on.”
